WORKSHOP 1:

Career Planning: Developing the Five Year Plan
By Grace Chong/ Desiree Mou

This two-hour workshop, facilitated by Grace Chong and Desi Mou will focus on the importance of career and personal development plans and how this is linked to fostering leadership. The facilitators will help delegates get started on a step-by-step process to create their own individual career road maps to take them where they want to go in their chosen careers.

Grace Chong is an independent business consultant in Health Care and Social Services. Working within the health care and social services sectors, Grace has 10 years of experience in change management, project management, business analysis, strategic planning, team building and leadership development. Her clients include Providence Health Care, WorkSafe BC, and Simon Fraser University. She also turned her passion for dogs into an online business in 2004 with www.puppyjones.com. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Grace moved to BC in 1992 and graduated from Simon Fraser University. 

Desiree Mou is Manager of Graduate Student Programs at UBC's Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology. While completing her masters degree at UBC, she began working as a facilitator and instructional designer for the Centre, and for the past 10 years, she has provided teaching and presentation-related support to undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty members. She enjoys designing and facilitating workshops of every length and coaching one-on-one, and believes the key to effective learning is engagement - helping learners and audience members connect with what they're learning. 

WORKSHOP 2:

Personal Branding and Social Networking: Marketing Yourself for Success
By Tai Cheng

This two-hour workshop, facilitated by Tai Cheng, will focus on the importance of social networking and personal branding. Panelists will share their tips and tools for networking as well as share resources and information about online social media opportunities. Each delegate will gain insight into building client relationships and networking as well as complete a “relationship score card” and strategic contact list.

Tai Cheng is a lawyer with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and specializes in corporate and commercial law. He is actively involved in his firm's client development and business marketing initiatives, as well as student recruitment campaigns.

Tai also serves on a number of charitable and non-profit boards and is involved in the community through various professional groups. Tai received his LL.B. and MBA from the University of Calgary. He worked as a banking lawyer with Linklaters LLP in London, United Kingdom before returning to his hometown of Vancouver, B.C. to resume his legal practice. Tai can be reached at: tcheng@blg.com

By day, Amy Chan is the Director of Marketing at Kiwi Collection (www.kiwicollection.com), the world’s largest luxury hotel reviewer. By night, she goes by the moniker AmyFabulous, with a column in the 24 Hours newspaper, articles in The Huffington Post and a personal blog, www.amyfabulous.com. Amy has seen success in her marketing career by aligning her work experience with well known brands such as TELUS, 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, DDB Palmer Jarvis and more. She has positioned her personal brand as one who concentrates in the areas of relationship advice, lifestyle and travel. In her spare time, when she's not making mix tapes or up to general do-gooding, she's a food enthusiast and world traveler.

Austin Nairn, Program Manager, Vancouver Board of Trade

Austin Nairn is the program Manager for the Vancouver Board of Trade’s Leaders of Tomorrow and Company of Young Professionals Programs. Through these programs, Austin engages young people and supports their personal and professional development. Having been at the Vancouver Board of Trade for several years, Austin helps to connect those in the early stages of their career with opportunities, events, and volunteer initiatives to support their career growth. Prior to joining the Vancouver Board of Trade, Austin was the Membership Services Manager at the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce for over three years where he focused on membership marketing, retention, and business start up services. Austin holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Northern British Columbia in Marketing and Finance. He has a diverse background which includes business support, student society management, and running a successful business. Austin has addressed various schools, business people, and non profit organizations on topics ranging from networking to personal branding and business start up support. An accomplished speaker and Toastmaster, Austin enjoys interacting with the audience to ensure they gain the most possible benefit from his presentation.

Kumiko Ide, Senior Community Cultivation Manager, Tribal DDB

Kumiko Ide is a Senior Community Cultivation Manager at Tribal DDB - a branch of DDB Canada's digital offering that also includes Radar DDB. She manages the execution of social online campaigns, provides strategic thinking in a multi-platform capacity and identifies new trends, tools, and technologies for clients such as Benefit Cosmetics, the Canadian Tourism Commission, Tourism Kelowna and the Vancouver Convention Centre. In the past, she has also provided media training and online strategy work for Microsoft, HP, Disney, and LG Electronics. Kumiko attended the University of British Columbia, where she studied Political Science and Fine Arts. She has lived around the world, and spent her childhood moving between Canada, Bangladesh, Singapore, Indonesia and Japan.

Career Roundtable Session

Get a chance to meet and speak to industry leaders from various professional fields during a one-hour career roundtable discussion. A presentation on the importance of self-awareness in choosing and developing your career will kick off this session, followed by a mentor-led, small group discussion on the realities of a particular career and the role of identity in leadership. This will be a perfect opportunity for participants to hear life stories and gain insight into career paths.

Networking Session

If you didn’t get a change to speak with a mentor at the career roundtable session, don’t worry! This is a mix-and-mingle style networking session with mentors and other delegates. This is designed to give you an opportunity to walk around and speak with different mentors in different industries or connect with other delegates if you didn’t get a change to meet them.
