Dear valued members of C3 Korean Canadian Society,
As the Chair of C3, I am proud to say that our organization has been going strong for the past 14+ years continually finding ways to bridge the local Korean Community with the Greater Vancouver Community. Next week, the municipal districts in the Greater Vancouver will elect representatives to voice their opinions on issues we care about such as regulating businesses, funding for programs, projects and community services, housing regulations, and more.
One of our key mandates dating back to 2003 is non-partisanship and we've been consistent with this approach. This time around we emphasize the importance to exercise your civil rights by voting!
Our team in collaboration with UBC's Korean Arts Student Association student body has created a "fact sheet" document to raise awareness of key dates and issues that are represented at the city level. Our ultimate goal is to encourage increased voter participation within our Korean Community. We hope you take the time to review and share this document amongst your colleagues, friends and peers to ensure your rightful participation.
If you are curious and want to have a better understanding of the political parties and candidates that are represented in your district, please refer to this source for more details.
We look forward to seeing you at the polls on October 20th! Please vote!

Jack Cha will immediately step down as he has served C3 as an IT officer, C3 Leadership Conference Direct rand Chair. "Serving our Korean Canadian community through C3 has been an honour and a privilege. Even as the C3 chair in the last two years, I always considered myself as just one of the many community volunteers involved in C3. I knew that each of us made a difference, one small steps each time but taken together as a group towards a common goal. I was truly lucky to make lifelong friends through C3 and we call ourselves extended C3 family members, which includes Tina, the new chair for C3."
Added Cha, "Tina is an exceptional community leader who has been serving our community for many number of years. Tina is fun to be around and she has kept me and others motivated to continue volunteering at C3 from 2010. Press Release - February 24, 2017
Vancouver, BC – C3 Korean Canadian Society is proud to present its 10th Annual Leadership Conference on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Robson Square (800 Robson Street) from 8:30am 5:00pm (lunch included). The C3 Leadership Conference is geared towards Korean-Canadian undergraduate and recent post-graduate students looking for some future career inspiration or simply an opportunity to network with professionals in their industries of interest.
The theme for this year is “Own Your Identity”. This year's C3 Leadership Conference will focus on the theme of self-identity and the relationship between self-identity, pride, confidence and the development of the future leaders of our community. We want to encourage and empower our delegates to own their path and destiny. The conference will be an all-day event with two keynote speakers, a workshop and mentor roundtable and a speed networking session.
In support of this year’s theme, “Own Your Identity”, we will have two dynamic speakers, Joseph Juhn (US attorney turned documentary filmmaker) and Miyoung Lee (CBC Reporter). They are both going to speak about their relationship with their cultural identity (both Korean born but raised in the US and Canada, respectively) and in their own different ways how their connection with their Korean heritage formed their respective self-identities, their work ethic, their passion, their successes and their desire to inspire others.
Joseph Junn, will be sharing his experience creating his inspiring film “Jeronimo”. Having always been interested in Korean diaspora, “Jeronimo” is hauntingly painful yet heartfelt look into a community of Koreans in Cuba, who have passionately maintained their cultural identity over several decades despite not having any physical connections with Korea. This is a story of tremendous cultural pride and it inspired Joseph to create this feature length documentary.
Miyoung Lee was born in South Korea and immigrated with her parents and younger brother at a young age to Canada. In the early eighties and nineties, Miyoung was one of the few Korean-born Canadians growing up in Coquitlam, B.C. and she will speak about her struggles reconciling her Korean heritage with her Canadian influences and how an acceptance of her cultural identity as part of her self-identity fueled her confidence and ultimately the work ethic and motivation that led to her successful career as a news journalist for CBC.
The second half of the Leadership Conference will focus on providing networking opportunities for our delegates. In order to prepare the delegates for an afternoon of networking, the afternoon will begin with a 45 minute workshop conducted by professional career counsellors who will give delegates an instructional workshop about strategies and tips to effectively grow one’s network. Following the workshop, the delegates will engage in a Mentor/Mentee Roundtable where they are afforded an opportunity to be matched with two (2) mentors who are professionals in the industries of their choice. The leadership conference will end with a new feature we are calling, “Speed Networking”, where delegates will have an opportunity to now practice their networking skills with a wider range of mentors from other industries. There will be a wide range of professional fields including, but not limited to, business, law, accounting, pharmacy, medicine, human resources, international trade and logistics and more.
For those who wish to attend, registration is open at www.c3society.org for $45 until March 8th.

Vancouver, BC – C3 Korean Canadian Society is excited to be partnering up with the Canadian Blood Services’ OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network by hosting a stem cell awareness and drive during the 15th Annual Korean Cultural Heritage Festival on Saturday, August 6th at the Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, BC.
Stem cell transplants are used for treating over 80 diseases and disorders. There are over 380,000 stem cell registrants in Canada and only 28% of them are ethnically diverse. Since, patients are more likely to find a matching donor from within their own ethnic group; this means that ethnically diverse patients may have a harder time finding a match.
“As a multicultural society, we have always been looking for opportunities to contribute to the Canadian society” says Jack Cha, who is the Chair of C3 Society. “Our goal is to properly educate by debunking popular myths about stem cell donation and to increase the number of donors within the Korean community”.
"Canadian Blood Services is grateful for the support of C3 and the opportunity at the Korean Cultural Heritage Festival to widen the diverse representation of the stem cell registry,” says Trudi Goels with Canadian Blood Services. “Less than 1 per cent of the registry is comprised of individuals with Northeast Asian ancestry. We are confident 17 to 35 year olds will want to step up and register to help save lives. The registration process takes just 15 minutes but making a commitment to become a stem cell donor can save someone’s life.”
Currently, the quickest way to register is through online registration at www.onematch.ca . You can also call Canadian Blood Services at 18882DONATE to have a registration package mailed to your address.

- Trudi Goels, Territory Manager – Stem Cells, Cord Blood, Canadian Blood Services – British Columbia & Yukon, 778-229-6343, Trudi.firstname.lastname@example.org
"Such initiative taken by C3 Society to support Canadian Blood Services to increase ethnically diverse donor registrants made a lot of sense to me. I hope to support future drives as well. Blood and stem cell donation is a great way to help those in need and to save lives."
Aaron Lee, Investment Advisor, Commodities & Futures Advisor, RBC Dominion Securities, International Investment Advisory
About C3 Society

About Canadian Blood Services
Canadian Blood Services manages the national supply of blood, blood products and stem cells, and related services for all the provinces and territories (excluding Quebec). We operate an integrated, pan-Canadian service delivery model that includes leading an interprovincial system for organ donation and transplantation. Our national scope, infrastructure and governance make us unique in the Canadian healthcare landscape. Canadian Blood Services is regulated as a biologics manufacturer by Health Canada and primarily funded by the provincial and territorial ministries of health. Canadian Blood Services is a not-for-profit charitable organization.
- The demand for life-saving stem cell transplants has tripled over the past five years and continues to grow at a staggering rate.
- Stem cells are immature cells that can turn into any of the cells present in the bloodstream. They’re currently used for treating more than 80 blood-related diseases and disorders.
- At any given time there are almost 1,000 Canadian patients looking for an unrelated stem cell match to survive.
- Approximately 75 per cent of patients rely on the generosity of an unrelated volunteer stem cell donor to save their life.
- Canada’s unique diversity presents a challenge in our ability to find stem cell matches for patients from our ethnically diverse communities, since a patient’s best match is often someone of similar ancestry.
- Cord blood stem cells have unique abilities that make them easier to use for transplantation; even when a match between donor and patient is not perfect.
